High-Volume vs Low-Volume Injection Moulding in Scotland

At Protoshape, we provide injection moulding and toolmaking services for both high-volume and low-volume production, delivering precision, reliability, and cost-effective solutions for every project.

High-Volume Injection Moulding

For high-volume production, we use full heat-treated steel tools, including multi-cavity moulds if required. These tools are:
  • More expensive upfront but designed to produce millions of parts
  • Extremely repeatable, ensuring consistent quality over long production runs
  • Perfect for commodity and engineering plastics in large quantities
Injection moulding is ideal for high-volume applications, providing speed, accuracy, and durability that other processes cannot match.

Low-Volume Injection Moulding

For low-volume production or prototyping, we use:
  • Aluminium bolster tools – fast, cost-effective, and capable of producing up to hundreds of thousands of parts
  • Insert plates – flexible and economical for small runs
Low-volume tooling has a shorter tool life than full steel, but is ideal for:
  • Prototyping
  • Pilot production runs
  • Testing new designs
Despite the lower cost, some of our aluminium tools have produced over half a million parts due to careful tool maintenance and expertise.
